Very crunchy chips, recipe for oven or Airfryer

Very crunchy chips from the oven or Airfryer

Crunchy chips, mashed potatoes, potato salad, jacket potatoes… I love potatoes! I can eat them in every way, also just boiled and without dressing. But if they are crunchy… mm-hmm that’s yummy!

Some people think that potatoes are fattening. It is true that they have quite a few calories but certainly this varies depending on the way they are prepared. Often too much sauces and fats are used to dress potatoes and frequently they are fried. Well in this case of course they become a caloric bomb! Fortunately there are many other tasty ways to eat potatoes without piling too much calories or Propoints…

Very crunchy chips, recipe for oven or Airfryer, Light & Yummy

It is very important to integrate potatoes in any healthy diet as they are full of vitamins and minerals: vitamin C, B5 and potassium to name some. And of course they have lots of fibres just like pasta or cereals, although by taking off the skin a lot of the fibres goes with it too. When I find potatoes with very thin skin I leave it on and wash the potatoes very well before cooking them. I use potatoes in my meals as I would use pasta or rice as the main portion of carbohydrates. And I try to find ways to prepare them with lots of taste and little sin… let’s see my Very crunchy chips recipe, one of the most liked on my Italian blog…

Very crunchy chips from the oven or Airfryer

Information

Type: Side dishes
Portions: 2
Preparation time: 15 min
Cooking time: 30-40 min in traditional oven, 20 min in the Airfryer
Difficulty: easy
Weight Watchers ProPoints per portion: 6

Ingredients

500 g potatoes (about 10-12 small/medium size) suitable for baking
1 tsp extra virgin olive oil
salt to taste

Preparation

Scrub the potatoes very well especially if are going to leave the skin on and cut them in slices not too thick. Put the sliced potatoes in a bowl of cold water for at least 10 minutes: this way the potatoes will release some of the starch. Drain the potatoes from the starchy water and boil them in a pan with clean cold water and a little salt. Make sure to notice when the water starts boiling: the potatoes must only boil 3-4 minutes, no more! Drain and let them cool down.

Put the potato slices in a large bowl and add 1 tsp of olive oil. Now this is the trick: use your hands to massage the oil well in the potatoes. You may not believe it until you try: when you use your fingers instead than some utensils you will be able to coat all the slices with a little oil!

Traditional oven
Preheat the oven at 250°. Distribute the potato slices on the oven tray lined with baking paper making sure they do not overlap too much. When the oven is hot put the tray in for about 30-40 minutes turning the slices a couple of times during the cooking. The potatoes are done when the slices have all become nicely golden.

Airfryer
If you have one at home than this is the moment of using it. The potatoes will transform in Very crunchy chips in only 20 minutes at 200°. Make sure you scroll the Airfryer basket a couple of times while cooking, so the slices cook evenly and don’t stick to each other! And yes, I do love my Airfryer but the company that makes it does not pay me for advertising it (unfortunately!).

Whichever way you cook the Very crunchy chips, when they are ready put them in a warm bowl and sprinkle salt to taste.

  1. It is an awesome recipe. I like oily food. Can I add here a little bit more oil in this recipe?

  2. These are great! I used my airfryer and they were deliciously crisp and didn’t stick together either.

    1. Not the veggies you mentioned: I have tried with courgettes and they dry too much and with aubergines cut in cubes and they are perfect, as fried without the grease! 😉

      1. Thank you. I tried bunch of veggies, and so far broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts and anything like that frozen comes out delicious. Also, chickpeas are awesome with a bit of spice on them. I love sweet potatoes oil free. Etc.

  3. Were you able to put all 500g of potato chips in one time in air fryer? Thank you.
I am thinking about buying an air fryer but want to make sure I don’t have to ‘fry’ my veggies in two rounds for dinner for two. I would use it only for veggies.

    1. Hi MsDee 🙂 Yes I manage up to 900 grams but it’s important to shake the pane every 5 minutes and, of course, the cooking time will be longer 😉

    2. I bought the largest one and I have a divider so you can cook your potatoes in one side and veggies in the other

  4. Thank’s for sharing potatoe chips. I was not aware of this cooking method. I love the food at all difficult to handle temptation.
Yes the airfryer is really very helpful. I have just purchased one two weeks back and fried a lot of things. It really requires a small amount of oil. Very nice.
